Attack on Titan is more than just an anime, it’s a deep exploration of human nature and the complexities of morality. As I got into the series, several themes resonated with me, It prompted me to reflect on empathy, the cycle of violence, and the possibility of hope in difficult circumstances.

One of the most striking aspects of the story that caught my attention, is the parallel between Eren Yeager and Reiner Braun. Both characters infiltrate the enemy’s society and come to understand that their so-called foes are, in many ways, just like them…..people with hopes, fears, and loved ones. Eren, after living among the Marleyans, recognizes their humanity. Yet, despite this understanding, he chooses to repeat the same devastating actions that Reiner once inflicted upon his own people.
This shows the harsh reality that hate and cruelty only lead to more hate and cruelty. The series presents a brutal truth: humans will always find a reason to fight when driven by selfish desires and blinded by anger. No one wins when everyone is selfish.
Reiner justifies his past actions by blaming Marleyan propaganda and his desire to be seen as a hero. He knew attacking Paradis Island was morally wrong but proceeded because he wanted recognition and to fulfill what he thought was his duty. Similarly, Eren plans to unleash catastrophic destruction, fully aware of the innocence of many who will suffer. Both characters hide behind justifications, but ultimately, they make choices based on personal desires.
This brings us to essential questions: Who are the real enemies? What drives ordinary people to commit horrific acts? Is anyone capable of becoming a monster under certain circumstances? The series suggests that the lines between good and evil are blurred. Empathy becomes complicated when victims and perpetrators share similar motivations and fears.
The only way to escape this cycle is to accept others differences and talk things out. Nationalism and deep-seated anger blind individuals and societies, leading to cycles of hatred. Each act of violence gives rise to more resentment, affecting innocent people and dragging new generations into ongoing conflicts. It’s a tragic failure when adults allow their grudges to overshadow the well-being of children, who are forced to inherit battles they didn’t start. Prioritizing hatred over healing only ensures that the cycle continues.
The anime offers a lesson about the importance of breaking the cycle of violence. It calls on us to take responsibility for our actions and to prioritize compassion over vengeance. By understanding the humanity in others, even those we consider enemies, we can begin to dismantle the walls….both literally and metaphorically.
In conclusion, the series challenges us to reflect on our values and the world we are shaping. Hate and cruelty only lead to more hate and cruelty. The only way to escape this cycle is to accept others differences and engage in dialogue. Humans will always find a reason to fight, but perhaps we can choose a different path. The choice is ours to make.
